Treaty Settlement Update

Connecting with our eight Iwi has been our main focus over the past few months, and will continue as we move closer toward signing Terms of Negotiation with the Crown.

What this means is that the Terms we sign, specific to our Iwi, provide a good foundation to improve our relationship with the Crown based on the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi. The terms also ensure the settlement works to remove our sense of grievance in a fair and durable manner.

The eight Iwi of Taranaki are collectively known as Ngā Iwi o Taranaki and are represented at the negotiations table by a team of six negotiators recommended by the Chairs of all eight Iwi, also known as the Taranaki Iwi Chairs Forum.

Our negotiators are Te Pahunga (Marty) Davis, Haimona Maruera, Daisy Noble, Liana Poutu, Hemi Sundgren, Jamie Tuuta (Lead). Our team is also joined by Negotiation Manager, Hannah Buchanan, and Communications Advisor, Marisa Balle.

The team of negotiators are working hard together to achieve a final settlement regarding the grievances Ngā Iwi o Taranaki have with the Crown in relation to our tupuna, Taranaki Maunga.

We’ve also met with the Crown to tell them what our Iwi aspirations are and to start initial negotiation discussions. And, because we are working together as a collective, we needed the Crown to understand that it will not be an easy task to take our people on the journey with us. Our message is clear, we need to ensure that all of our Iwi have the resources they need to allow whanau to be involved in this unique and significant part of our history.

Over the coming months we will continue to attend as many hui as possible throughout the rohe and provide updates directly and indirectly through the various Iwi Runanga and Trusts. It’s important that you have your say in this process so we also encourage you and your whanau to attend hui-a-iwi and wānanga that allow you to participate and connect.

We also have formal meetings with the Crown scheduled in March to further discuss what is important to us so that we can ensure the best possible care and protection for our tupuna Maunga.
